What is Ego State Therapy?

You may have at times said, "there is a part of me that feels this way and a part of me that feels that way," or "on the one hand I think this, and on the other hand I think that." We all have different parts of ourselves that have different ages, thoughts, wants, needs, and behaviors. In Ego State Therapy, we will explore the various parts of you that contribute to the way you think, feel, behave, and experience the world. In this work, you and I will explore your parts' ages, functions, relationships, and needs. We will work towards an understanding or nurturing of parts. We will spend time identifying and enhancing the oldest, wisest parts of you and healing the hurt, angry, or afraid parts of you.

What if I want a space just to talk?

My hope is to provide a space that feels supportive and comforting. Sometimes you may need someone to hear, validate, and sit with you in your pain. During our conversations, we may also make space for learning coping skills, understanding the parts of you, and moving towards EMDR reprocessing.

Will I learn coping skills?

Part of our work together will be learning and building realistic and individualized coping skills (or "resouces") and self-care into your routine and nervous system. Resourcing may include mindfulness exercises, communication skills, re-evaluation of sleep hygiene and daily routine, and reinforcing intrinsic strengths.

 

In conjunction with providing your nervous system with as many resources as it needs to feel more calm and present in and out of session, we will also work towards looking at the roots and patterns of your pain. If we can heal the roots, you won't need to work so hard to deal with how the pain shows up in your life.
